IN THE NAME OF GOD, الله مسب
LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE TERMS OF THE
OPENING IN THE QURÂN (THE BASMALAH, ةلمسبلا)
When one opens the Qurân at the first page, the first thing one
reads is: "Bismi Allah Al-Raḥmân Al-Raḥîm″ (ميحرلا نمحرلا الله مسب),
which literally means: "IN THE NAME OF GOD THE ORIGIN THE
ARRANGING".
The purpose of this opening named basmalah (ةلمسب) is to remind that
each thing begins and is done "In The Name of God". Incidentally, it
is for this reason that Muslims have a habit of preceding their acts and
gestures by the words "Bismi-Allah″ (الله مسب): "IN THE NAME OF GOD".
The basmalah (ةلمسبلا), the opening
The basmalah (ةلمسبلا) is composed of four words: Bismi (مسب),
Allâh (الله), Al-Raḥmân (نمحرلا) and Al-Raḥîm (ميحرلا).
Bismi (مسب) means "In The Name of"/"By The Name of". Usually,
"In The Name of"/"By The Name of" is written مساب (bi-‘smi). The
writing of "In The Name of God" without an alif (ا) (الله مسب) is
exceptional and exclusive to God. Allâh (الله) is a Name specific to
1
God , designating "The God"; it is the contraction of al-‘ilêh (هللإا),
"the divinity".
1 God cannot be defined as such by any name; no designation can define Him.
However, He has all of the Superexcellent Attributes.
